DEFENCE OF AMERICA HUGE CONTRACTS LET MANY NEW VESSELS (United Press Asn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Sept. 10, 3.15 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 The Navy has awarded contracts for 201 warships, which will cost 3,861,000,000 dollars. It is estimated that they will require five years to complete. Simultaneously it is revealed that final negotiations have been reached toward the acquisition of 2400 aeroplanes, worth 108,000,000 dollars. Today’s naval contracts will increase the present authorised tonnage by 70 per cent, including seven battleships, eight aircraftcarriers, 27 cruisers, 115 destroyers, and 43 submarines.
The House of Representatives unanimously passed a 23,680,000 dollars dry dock bill authorising a dock costing 10,000,000 dol/ars at New York, a dock costing 7,500,000 dollars in the Panama Canal area, and the improvement of the Boston dry dock.
