GOSSIP FROM ALL PARTS

Te Rapa horses engaged on the first day of the Avondale meeting include Midland, Cappy, Karatoki, Hum-a-Scng, Sieglinde, Poutama, Beau Repaire. Raceline, Panomi, Marshall Hall, Gaine’s Choice, Forest Acre, Gas Acre and Gold Spot. Gate Takings of £IOB Gate takings at the Te Awamutu Light Horse Association’s patriotic fixture at Te Awamutu on Saturday amounted to £IOB, a gratifying achievement, especially as no charge was made for cars. Allegretto Allegretto is standing up well to his work and is bearing a healthy appearance. The greater part of his preparation is carried out on the roads and he appears to be thriving on it. Rival Improved Since racing disappointingly at the Pakuranga Hunt last month, Rival has been hitting out in improved style at Auckland headquarters and he may be seen to better advantage at Avondale this week than was the case at Ellerslie. Young Paddon Young Paddon hit out with customary brilliance on the tracks at Te Rapa on Saturday and he should strip in good heart when called upon to race again. On Saturday his time for half-a-mile was by far the best of the morning.

For Second Day Gay Rosette has been shaping in improved fashion in her latest efforts at Te Rapa and, according to present intentions, will be produced on the second day of the Avondale meeting. On Saturday morning she showed to advantage in a five furlong essay with Sieglinde and Gold Spot.

Won Pakuranga Parade Golden Pay, who is to contest the Avondale Stakes on Saturday, won the two-year-old parade at the Pakuranga Hunt and the speed he displayed on that occasion will ensure him a following when he goes into the starter’s hands this week. Recovered Well Queen City has made a good recovery from the hock injury that came against her towards the latter part of last season and she again worked solidly last week at Takanini. With 7.4 she should give a forward account of herself in the Flying Handicap at Avondale this week. Tooley Street Tooley Street has made good progress in his schooling essays since being taken in hand by A. McGregor and his exhibition over five hurdles on Saturday in company with Midland was one of the features of the morning’s programme. Tooley Street is a good hurdler in the making. Beau Leon Beau Leon did not make the trip to Awapuni to contest the Wanganui Guineas on Saturday but there is nothing the matter with his condition and he will be taking his place in the Champion Plate on the first day at Avondale. Over the past week the quality of his work suggests he is at the peak of his form and Mr E. H. Cuckey’s representative will command an optimistic following in engagements this week-end. Royevrun Royevrus shaped encouragingly in his first up for a spell of several months in the Jellicoe Handicap at Ellerslie last month and if he has progressed well in the interim he should take a prominent part in the decision of the Flying Handicap at Avondale on Saturday. In the Jellicoe Handicap he was coming like a train at the finish to beat all but Te Kawiti and Flying Acre and the long Avondale straight should be right to his liking. In Work Again The three-year-old Surveyor gelding, Silveyor, who showed a fine turn of speed on the tracks last season, promise which he incidentally failed to reproduce in public, is back again in work at headquarters and the other morning indicated that he can still cover the ground by reeling off three furlongs along the back in 39 4-ss. He has furnished well in the interim and interest will attach to his progress. Will Be Hard Midland will be suited by the distance of the Kingsland Hurdles (U miles) at Avondale on Saturday. It will be recalled that at the recent Pakuranga Hunt it was only in the final furlong that he commenced to feel the pinch and as the distance on that occasion was a mile and threequarters it can be assumed that he will be seen to better advantage over Saturday’s shorter journey.

Beau Repaire Beau Reparire, who lost form towards the latter part of last season as the result of soreness, has been infusing dash into his latest efforts at headquarters and if appearances are any criterion he should prove an early winner for the Julian establishment. On Saturday he is to contest the Avondale Cup and is not without prospects of springing a surprise.

Raceline’s Credentials Raceline put up a solid performance at New Plymouth last month to beat all but Noble Fox in the Halcombe Memorial (9 furlongs) and it was generally conceded at the time that had Raceline been nearer to the leaders in the early running he would probably have turned the tables. Raceline is to contest the Avondale Cup this week and on the minimum will have to be respected. He seldom looked better than at present. Surella Well Surella has been working stylishly on the tracks at Takanini and the other morning was responsible for a smart effort over five furlongs, soundly accounting for Gay Miss in 1.5, which was the best of the morning over the distance. Surella is to contest the sprint at Avondale on Saturday and will have an opportunity to make mends for disappointments of last season when he was unplaced in his four essays. At the Pakuranga Hunt last month he was in the Jellicoe Handicap.
