CHURCHILL’S NAMESAKE
VILLAGE IN SOMERSET (Times Air Mail Service) LONDON, July 24 Inhabitants of the village of Churchill, Somerset, are proud of the Prime Minister. “He is their idol,” an Evening Standard reporter was told by th i keeper of the village public house, tlv* Churchill Inn. “ One of the ‘ locals ’ who comes into the bar is so enthusiastic that he would strike down any man who let out a foolish word about his champion.” The population of the village, which stands about three miles east of Banwell in the heart of the county, is 700. There are only about half-a-dozen people on the telephone. The village is the birthplace of the original John Churchill, who, following a series of military and political victories, became the Duke of Marlborough. Mr Winston Churchill is one of his descendants.
