FARMING PROBLEMS
WORK IN WARTIME Objection to farmers being required to pay the proposed excess I profits tax was voiced at a meeting of the Waikato sub-Provincial Execu- ; tive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday. Mr G. T. Crawley presided. After ! some discussion a resolution was 1 passed on which it was stated that as increased production of foodstuffs, requested as a special war effort, 1 could be achieved only by increased ! work and longer hours, all farmers i should be exempt from the proposed ! excess profits tax on income derived I from such increased production.
Referring to the guaranteed price for this season, a remit was approved demanding that the Government give immediate consideration to the urgent necessity of meeting all increased costs if the farmers were to meet the demand for increased production. Hours of Work The meeting decided to ask the Government to clarify the position regarding export meat prices and the
question of shipping facilities. Besides criticising the action of the Industrial Emergency Council in declining to authorise an extension of working hours under awards, the meeting decided to ask the Government to clarify the position. The necessity for supplying finance to border-line farmers to enable them to increase production was also stressed. Mr Crawley, in referring to primary production committees and their work, said that many farmers were becoming discouraged about the way they were being treated. It was resolved to ask the Government to pay committeemen’s out-of-pocket expenses when they attend the meetings.
