PEACE THROUGH VICTORY PETITION TO GOVERNMENT OPPOSITION TO HERTZOG (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 5 The Capetown correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says a “Peace through Victory” petition, bearing 516,922 signatures, and urging the Prime Minister, General Smuts, not to allow a dishonourable peace, will be presented on Friday. The petition represents the reply of the Government’s supporters to the weak-kneed policy of General Hertzog’s followers, who mustered only 14,800 signatures for their Women’s Peace Petition.
Reports are current of trouble inside the Hertzog caucus because of pressure-from the extreme Republican olement on General Hertzog and Dr. Malan.
