DEFENCE OF GIBRALTAR
CANAL DUG ACROSS ISTHMUS British forces at Gibraltar are digging a canal to isolate the fortress from the Spanish mainland and strengthen its defences, states the Christian Science Monitor. The Canal runs from the .Mediterranean westward to Algeciras Bay, between the fortifications and the nuetral zone, at which point the peninsula is about three quarters of a mile wide. The garrison expects substantial reinforcements in troops and more long-range guns. _
