PHILATELIC INTERESTS

HAMILTON SOCIETY MEETS SINGLE SHEET COMPETITION The September meeting of the Hamilton Philatelic Society was held last night in the Y.M.C.A., there being a good attendance. In the absence of the president, Mr H. B. Hill, who is indisposed, the secretary, Mr J. C. Ross, was elected to the chair. Seven new members, Mrs M. Acton, Messrs F. Acton, K. Acton, R. W. Coates, H. Farr, C. A McDonald and N. Pope, were elected. A number of valuable philatelic journals was received by the society, having been donated by Mr H. V. Hildreth. A competition was held in the form of a single sheet display by all members. Mr K. Acton’s entry won first place, Mr and Mrs F. Acton tied for second, place and Mr R. Ridley was third. Judging was done on the following ratio and basis:—Philatelic i knowledge 30, completeness 20, presentation 20, condition 20, and rarity jlO points. A silver cup donated by Mr Hill will be presented to the winner at the October meeting.

It was announced that two of the members, Messrs J. Owsley and W. Dye, had entered military camp since last meeting and the secretary was instructed to convey to them by letter the good wishes of the members.

A letter was received conveying goodwill from the president of the Footscray Philatelic Society of Australia. A committee was formed to set in train the arrangements for the annual birthday celebrations in November. A most comprehensive display of Belgian stamps was received from the G.P.0.. Wellington, and was greatly admired, the colourings being exquisite. A number of visitors was entertained and several of these intimated their intention of joining up at the next meeting. During supper members were reminded that at the next meeting there would be a lecture by Mr Hill on the “Stamps of Ceylon,” which would be illustrated by lantern.
