BACON PRODUCTION

RESULTS OF COMPETITION MAORI FARMER’S SUCCESS HIGH QUALITY OF ENTRIES To encourage producers to carry pigs through the winter and bring them to baconer weights, a competition was held by the New Zealand Co-operative Pig Marketing Association. The competition aroused keen interest and is reported to have provided valuable information for the pig industry. The winning pigs were described by the judge, Mr M. J. Scott, superintendent of the pig industry, as outstanding. Separate competitions were held in different localities, the judge having the assistance of supervisors of the various district pig councils. A Maori farmer, Mr G. Brown, won not cnly the Gisborne and East Coast competition but also the Dominion competition. Mr Brown has won the competition previously. Points were awarded for grade, length and quality of hams and shoulders, with deductions for under-weight or over-weight and for blemishes. Prizes of £ls, £7, £2 and £1 were offered in each district, and prizes of £4O and £lO were given for first and second for the Domiinon. Judge Praises Quality In commenting on the quality of the entries, the judge, Mr Scott, said that the Gisborne pigs were outstanding, principally because of the excellent grading returns and lack, of blemish. The competition had proved conclusively that second litter pigs, which would normally be sent away as porkers in the autumn, could profitably be kept and sent away as bacon in the early spring. The results were:— Dominion Prizes.—G. Brown, Puha. East Coast, 163 points, 1; A. E. Winter, Waltotara. 1675, 2. North Auckland. —11. E. Johnson. Klrlpaka, 165 and 1555, 1 and 3; R. O.
