FAT STOCK SALES
DROP IN BEEF PRICES MUTTON RATES HIGHER AUCKLAND, Thursday A further drop of 2s per 1001 b occurred in beef prices at the Westfield fat stock sales yesterday. Mutton prices were higher as a result of keen competition. An average lamb entry commanded a firm market and sold steadily. Prices for calves were firm to better, compared with last week. Baconer prices were firm at ruling levels, but there was a distinct improvement in those offered for all classes of porker pigs. Comparison of Quotations The following is a summary of the prices realised for the last two weeks at the Westfield fat stock sales:
THE AUCTIONEERS’ REPORTS Alfred Buckland and Sons, Limited, Dalgety and Company, Limited, and the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, report:— Beef.—Again a big yarding of ox beef was penned, and proved more than equal to the demand. A good proportion of extra heavy bullocks was included in the offering. Values again receded 2s per 1001 b. Cows and heifers in big numbers shared the drop. Extra choice ox, £1 18s per 1001 b.; choice and prime, £1 15s to £1 17s; secondary and plain, £1 11s to £1 13s; extra prime young cow and heifer, £1 9s to £1 13s; choice and prime, £1 6s to £1 8s; ordinary cow beef, £1 3s to £1 ss; extra heavy prime steers, £ls to £ls 15s; heavy, £l4 to £l4 15s; lighter, £l2 10s to £l3 10s; light, £ll to £l2; small and unfinished, £6 15s to £lO ss; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, £lO to £l2 10s; heavy, £8 5s to £9; lighter, £6 10s to £7 10s; other killable cows, £5 to £6.
Sheep.—Smaller numbers than last week were yarded and sold under a keen demand at improved rates. Extra heavy prime wethers, 40s to 42s 9d; heavy, 36s 6d to 38s; medium, 33s to 355; light, 29s 6d to 325; plain and unfinished, 26s 6d to 28s 6d; extra heavy prime young and maiden ewes, 30s to 33s 6d; heavy, 27s 6d to 295; lighter, 23s 6d to 25s 6d; plain and aged, 18s to 21s 6d; others, 7s 6d to 16s 6d. Lambs.—Average numbers were penned. All classes sold readily at firm late rates. Extra heavy prime lambs, £1 13s 6d to £1 14s; heavy, £1 10s to £1 12s 6d; medium, £1 8s to £1 9s 6d; lighter, £1 5s to £1 7s 6d; light, £1 2s to £1 4s; small and plain, 19s to £1 Is; cull lambs, 16s to 18s. Calves.—There was a full yarding, with values firm for heavy classes and improved rates ruling for medium and light-weight. Runners, £5 to £ll ss; heavy vealers, £6 to £7 2s; medium, £5 2s to £5 18s; light, £4 to £4 4s; small, £1 5s to £3 15s; unfinished and’ bucket-fed, £1 to £2 2s; bobby and rough calves, 6s to £1 4s.
Pigs.—A small offering met a ready sale at prices firm for baconers and showing improvement for porkers. Choppers, £3 3s to £4 12s; heavy baconers, £4 5s to £4 14s; medium, £4 to £4 4s; light, £3 16s to £3 18s; heavy porkers, £3 14s to £3 18s; medium, £3 Is to £3 10s; light, £2 13s to £2 18s; small and unfinished, £2 9s to £2 11s; stores, £2 4s to £2 12s; slips, £1 14s to £2; weaners, £1 to £1 16s.

One thousand hoggets and wethers, tog-ether with 1450 head of rattle, were offered before a very large and representative bench of buyers. Competition throughout the sale was very keen and excellent prices realised, a total clearance being effected.
