OLD WEST SCHOOL

•SITE FOR PARK REPLY BY DEPARTMENT Advice that it did not appear possible to make the old Hamilton West School site available for public purposes was received by the Hamilton Borough Council last night in a letter from the Minister of Education, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason. The letter was a reply to the council’s request, in support of the Hamilton beautifying Society, that the site be made available as an addition to the town’s parklands. “One of the reasons for transferring the primary school children to another site,” said the Minister, “was in order that the Hamilton West site could be made available for the purposes of the Hamilton Technical School, which is situated on a very restricted area. As the primary school buildings are to be used for technical school purposes it does not appear possible to make the site available for public purposes.” With regard to the transfer of land from the Borough Council to the Education Department in 1921 and the exchange which was undertaken, but not fulfilled, the council was referred to correspondence written by the Minister of Education, the Hon. R. A. Wright, in 1927. On the motion of the Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, it was decided to receive the letter and advise the Minister that the council was not satisfied, as the council still considered that it Jiad been “done out” of some land.

The Mayor, Mr H. D. Caro, presided and also present were Messrs W. M. Cann, C. Croall, F. C. House, R. McCaw, C. Lafferty, F. Findlay, J. R. Fow, W. W. Dillicar and the borough officers. Leave of absence was granted Messrs H. M. Hammond, T. G. Reynolds, W. R. Shattock and J. E. Tidd. It was decided, in connection with Mr Tidd, who has been indisposed, to forward the council’s regards with the hope that he would soon be recovered.
