GALLANT SEAMAN
AWARD OF VICTORIA CROSS DEATH FOLLOWS WOUNDS STORY OF GREAT HEROISM (United Press Assn.—Elc**. Tel. Copyright) LONDON. Sept. 4 The Victoria Cross has been awarded to the late Leading-Seaman Jack Foreman Mantle, of H.M.S. Foylebank. The citation reads: ‘‘Mantle was in charge of the starboard pompom gun when enemy aircraft attacked the Foylebank on July 4. E irlv ;.i the action a bomb shattered his left leg. but he stood fast at the gun nr.d went on firing with the hand-gear, because the ship’s electric power had failed almost immediately. He was again wounded in many places. “Between tnc bur .t. of fire he had time to reflect the grievous injuries from which he would soon die, but his great courage bore him un to the end of the fight, v.hcn fell by the gun !:t» lv-d so valiently served.”
