CHANCE TO VOLUNTEER
SPECIAL PERMISSION GIVEN TERRITORIAL UNIT SHORT Although volunteering ended officially in New Zealand on July 22, special permission has been granted by the military authorities to the territorial Ist Battalion, 16th Waikato Regiment, to bring its ranks up to war strength if possible before the first ballot is held under the conscription regulations. The unit will encamp on October 1. This announcement was made last night at the first anniversary celebrations of the Hamilton Company of the National Military Reserve, by the officer commanding, Major L. E. Haines, D.S.O.
The Waikato Regiment will commence its period of intensive training on a full wartime establishment at Waiouru. About 700 members of all ranks will encamp for two months. At the completion of volunteering the unit had not acquired its lull strength. Major Haines stated that he could imagine nothing better than that sons of the ex-servicemen reservists should join the district’s own unit. He commended it to the sens of members of the company. The regiment would require youths between the ages of 18 and 20 years. Some reservists’ sons were already serving.
