TOPICS OF THE DAY
The Unarmed Legion “If this is a dark and dangerous hour, it is also a great one,” writes Mr J. A. Spender in an English paper. “Constant apprehension of its greatness will spur .the workman to do his utmost, harden every man and woman among us to fill the unforgiving minute with 60 seconds’ worth of distance run, silence controversy, tighten discipline. The inglorious speciality of the Nazi is the creation of chaos, physical and material chaos in the path of his armies, mental and moral in the minds of his opponents. Here the non-combatant has now his positive duty. It is upon the civilian that in the last resort the fighting force depends, upon his and her resolve to stand firm, to provide the sinews of war, to keep the day to day life going, to resist the organised confusion of enemy-inspired rumour. To the Government we look for a cool measurement of the dangers and clear and simple directions as to the ways of meeting them and minimising them. Let all plans be laid on the assumption that we have before us a period of the grimmest endurances and that we have the courage and patience for it.”
