BEEF AGAIN DOWN

VALUES AT FRANKTON SHEEP MARKET FIRM HIGHER BACON PRICES An over-supply of beef at the Frankton yards yesterday resulted in a further recession of values, the downward trend being more apparent for ox. Almost two rows of bullocks were on offer, while there wa‘3 an overflow entry of cows and heifers in the boner pens. Late quotations were repeated for a considerably lighter penning of fat sheep, but in an increased yarding of pigs more money was given for baconers.

Bullocks were approximately 15s a head cheaper, bidding being restrained right through the auction. Quality was up to standard with a far number of extra heavy prime descriptions. A few extra heavy pern were traded from £l3 5s to £l4 10s. and other heavy sorts from £ll 17 fid to £l2 10s. Light to medium mad from £lO 5s to £ll 17s 6d, and sma'L cattle from £8 to £9 6s. Last week’s top money'was £ls 10s. There was no great difference in the values for cow and heifer beef, and, although the market on the whole tended a shade easier, there were instances when firm values were realised. Light cattle often appeared dearer in comparison with heavier sorts. From £lO 2s 6d to £ll 18:-: was given for a few extra heavyweights, and from £9 2s to £lO purchased heavy prime pens. The bulk of the attractive pens, however, were auctioned from £7 7s to £8 10s. and ordinary fats were knocked down from £6 5s to £7 2s 6d. Little change was shown for an average penning of calves, while competition for bonei cattle usually maintained late rates Light Sheep Entry

The lightest for some weeks, the fat sheep entry consisted of poorer quality sorts and no really heavv choice wethers were shown. How ever, the reduction in numbers allowed late rates to be repeated. Occasionally individual quotations were slightly better than last week, this being noted especially in the case of ewes. From 35s 6d to 36s 6d was usually given for the best of the wethers on offer and from 31s to 34s 6d for fats. Extra prime ewes were quoted from 27s to 30s 9d, against 25s to 27s 6d last week, while fat ewes made from 22s 6d to 26s 9ri in comparison with 20s to 245. Hog- ; gets changed hands at practically the same money. Bacon, which was available in slightly greater supply, was more keenly competed for and values were slightly up, quotations a head being from 70s to 90s, in comparison with 75s to 87s. Porkers remained unchanged. Store pigs were again dear and some classes were often quoted slightly higher. Price Summary
