HUNTLY TRAGEDY
BOY DROWNED IN LAKE STORY TOLD AT INQUEST (Special to Times.) HUNTLY, Tuesday A verdict was returned at the inquest held before the coroner, Mr F. Harris, at Huntly today that William Lenar d Hallam, aged 13, was drowned on August 21 in Hahanoa Lake following the capsize of the canoe in which he was paddling with two other boys. One of the boys, Frederick Laurence Kay, aged 12, told how with Hallam and another boy, Eddie Frost, he went paddling in a canoe on the lake. They pushed it out from the northern shore, but when they were about half-way across the lake became very rough. Struck by two big waves the canoe was swamped and overturned. The three boys were thrown into the water and began to swim, but Hallam seemed to get into difficulties and shouted out “What are we going to do?” Witness told him to hang on to the canoe until they could get help. When last seen Hallam, who was a good swimmer, was still on top of the canoe, while the other two boys were about one chain away swimming for the shore.
