AMERICAN DESTROYERS
VALUE TO BRITISH FLEET GOODWILL AND FRIENDSHIP STRENGTHENING OF TIES (Official wireless) (Received Sept. 4, 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, Sept. 8 As a result of inquiries the following statement was issued by Mr A. V. Alexander, First Lord of the Admiralty:— “I greet with the utmost pleasure and satisfaction the announcement of an arrangement by which a number of United States destroyers will be made available for the British Navy. They come at a time when the strain upon our destroyer fleet has been very great and will be of inestimable value to us, not only for escorting convoys but also for protecting our coasts from the threat of invasion.
“Apart from the immediate advantage to both our own naval defence and that of the United States this event will strengthen the feeling of goodwill and friendship between our two great peoples.”
