WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

NOTICE TO MEMBERS All members, where possible, are invited to attend the church service to be held hi Steele Park (weather permitting) as part of the National day of prayer requested by His Majesty the King, on Sunday, September 8. Soldiers’ Parcels The secretaries of the various committees are requested to notify the secretary of the Waikato Federation, Mrs Scobie, of the number of parcel their institutes are able to contribute. Particulars as to the contents, etc., and the time of their delivery, are published under “The Women’s World” in this issue. WHITIORA The Whitiora Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting in the Y.M.C.A. rooms recently, Mrs Gate presiding over a fair attendance. Before the business opened, all members stood in silence as a mark of respect to our late members, Mrs Keats and Mrs Martin, and to Miss Fowle, of Jubilee Women’s Institute. It was arranged that the next meeting take place on September 18, and the birthday party on September 25 in the Y.M.C.A. rooms. The roll call “What would I do with £5,” caused much merriment. A very interesting talk on gardening was given by Mr Sanders, to whom a hearty vote of thanks was accord-

ed. It was decided to hold a card afternoon on Wednesday, September 11, in the Y.M.C.A. rooms at 2 p.m. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Mangnall, Lynstrum, Phyllis and Miss McKenzie. ROTO-O-RANGI The August meeting of the Roto-o-rangi Women’s Institutes was held in the local hall. Mrs W. Wakefield, who presided, extended a cordial welcome to all. The motto, “Begin well and end better,” was given by Mrs Hills. The roll call. “My favourite pastime,” revealed divers tastes. Mrs Wakefield exhibited a small % shoe made from silk stockings and explained the process of making these shoes. The golden thread was continued by Mrs Drummond, the subject being “Dahlia culture.” Mrs Drummond is donating dahlia and daffodil bulbs to members to grow for exhibition. A handkerchief competition arranged by Mrs White was won by Mrs Duncan. To an appreciative audience Mr Schjvass gave an excellent demonstraticn of marguerite boulet work, exhibiting some exquisite examples of his work. Mr Schwass was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The competition awards were as follows:—Bowl of flowers, Miss Kay Nickle 1, Miss Gwen Nickle 2; knitting, Mrs Brazendale, Mrs Cooper, Mrs Schwass and Mrs Duncan (equal) 1; sponge cake, Mrs L. Duncan 1, Mrs Cooper 2, Mrs H. Martin 3.

The hostesses who provided afternoon tea were Mesdames W. Nickle, Perrott and Miss Ray.
