BOMBERS OVER LONDON
SOME THRILLING DOG-FIGHTS PLANES CRASH IN SEA WATCHED BY SPECTATORS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyilgnt) (Received Sept. 3, 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, Sept. 2 The anti-aircraft gunners within two minutes shot down three of 40 bombers over the outskirts of the London area this afternoon. When the bombers attempted to bolt across to another part of the London area they found themselves confronted with a formation of fighters additional to those which were assailing Messerschmitts escorting bombers. The German attack was thoroughly broken up. A number of parachutes was seen falling as the battle ended. People sheltering near the cliffs in a south-east coast town late this afternoon saw three planes, with smoke pouring from them, plunge into the sea. Two others appeared to be crashing inland. All were Germans. Many bombs were dropped. Some fell in the main street of a southeast town and caused business premises to collapse. A great explosion previously shook a large area in south-eastern England when a raider crashed and its bombs blew up.
