LONDON’S BARRAGE BALLOONS TRAP PLANES BOMBS RENDERED HARMLESS Like hungry spiders watching for flies, says the Christian Science Monitor, London’s balloon barrage crews are waiting patiently for the first big air raid to prove that their lofty mooring cables are more than mere inspiration for amateur poets, and devices for strengthening public confidence. They already have given a sample of their use by netting four stray German raiders—and, inadvertently, five British planes as well. The latest German to be victimised by a cable was downed when British fighter planes enticed him into the trap of great dangling cables supported by the gargantuan “ guppy ” balloons. It is said that small bombs and even good-sized incendiary bombs bounce off the resilient balloons without damaging them. The big bags are constructed with inner compartments, so that a puncture would not bring them down, and the newest ones are declared to be lightningproof—a hint that they are constructed to withstand explosive attacks. Hundreds of Balloons The exact nature of the cables and their destructive qualities are military secrets, as are the height to which the balloon's can be flown and the number available. In the World War London had only 35 balloons, but today many hundreds soar daily over the metropolis to guard against attacks by dive bombers or low-flying scout planes. Other hundeds support vv'ir tentacles around strategic coastal spots, some anchored to barges. Each balloon is manned by a crew linked by an intricate communication system with all the the others so that any defence plan can be co-ordinated and executed instantaneously. Some idea of the size of these forces can be formed from the fact that more men are employed than were in all the Royal Air Force before its big expansion began in 1935. (The statesman’s yearbook for that year lists the R.A.F. at 33,000 men.) Mobility is one of the most valuable features of this fantastic but function defence arm. The balloons are anchored to especially designed trucks which can haul them down and speed to a new location in a few minutes. At present, the balloons are scattered all over the city, surging aloft in all sorts of weather from parks and golf courses and from beside big buildings.
