NEW DRIVING TESTS LICENSES NOT RENEWED (By Telegraph.—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, Monday There is now a possibility that the regulation requiring a new driving test for motorists who had not renewed their licenses within the three months from May 31 may be relaxed. Under a clause in the Motor Drivers’ Regulations, 1940, new road tests are required as from September 1 of all drivers who have not renewed their licenses. This has caused considerable concern among many drivers, particularly those who held licenses up to May 31 last and did not bother to renew, as they had decided not to register their cars for the time being owing to the petrol restrictions. Mr J. S. Hawkes, secretary of the Automobile Association, communicated this morning with the Commissioner of Transport, Mr G. L. Laurenson, to see if a relaxation of the regulation could be obtained, particularly in respect of motorists who held licenses up to May 31 last but aid not renew owing to the petrol restrictions. Mr Laurenson’s reply was that he would go into the matter and no doubt something would be done.
