30 MEN MISSING 250 SURVIVORS LANDED NIGHT IN LIFEBOATS (Called Frees Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Sept. 1 An Admiralty communique states: “ An armed merchant cruiser, H.M.S. Dunvegan Castle, of 15,000 tons, commanded by Captain H. Ardill, R.N., was torpedoed and subsequently sank. British warships landed 250 survivors.” The Dunvegan Castle was sunk in the North Atlantic. Thirty men are reported to be missing. The others spent the night in the lifeboats before two warships picked them up. A flying-boat had sighted the blazing vessel and guided the warships to the survivors. A survivor said the Dunvegan Castle shelled the submarine, but it was impossible to say whether she had scored a hit. The Dunvegan Castle was built by Harland and Wolff, Limited, in 1936 for the Union-Castle Line. She was a twin-screw motor-ship, and one of the newer vessels of the company’s passenger fleet.
