WATCHED BY SPECTATORS PLANES TWIST AND DIVE RAIDERS SHOT DOWN (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received September 2, 10.45 a.m.) LONDON, September 1 A few German bombers appeared to get through in this morning’s raid over the Thames Estuary;. Bombs fell and some damage was done. German bombers this morning renewed their attacks qn the southeast coast. Several formations were driven off with loss. Four raiders dived low over a coastal town and bombed a denselypopulated area, starting fires which were soon extinguished. Our fighters speedily dispersed another formation, which returned across the Channel with four machines short.

Several dog-fights occurred over the area, dozens of planes twisting and diving. The Germans bombed the London area this afternoon. There were no casualties. Two raiders were shot down.

The air battle was visible and explosions were heard. The warnings lasted 47 minutes.

It is authoritatively stated that the destruction of 85 planes yesterday means that Germany has lost abo&t 212 crew personnel, compared with twelve British pilots lost.
