Copyright) LONDON, August 31 It is authoritatively stated in Berlin that during the first year of war the German army lost 39,000 killed. 143,000 wounded and 24,000 missing. The German air force lost 1050 aeroplanes, while the enemy lost 6950 aeroplanes and 153 barrage balloons. German bombers carried out more than 3500 raids, dropping 5,000,000 bombs. More than 500 enemy warships and merchantmen, totalling over 2,000,000 tons, were sunk and 700 warships and merchantmen were damaged. Germany destroyed more than 400 enemy tanks.

The Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet states that Sweden lost 85 ships, aggregating 180,000 tons, in the first year of the war, while the lives of 363 seamen were lost.

A German communique states: “A U-boat sank three merchantmen, of a total tonnage of 29,000 tons, westward of the Hebrides, including a tanker of 12,000 tons.”
