TOPICS OF THE DAY
As With Napoleon “Belief in victory can be reinforced by knowledge of our history,” asserts the Birmingham Post. “In 1807, Napoleon controlled all Europe from Lisbon to Moscow; he had Russia for ally and controlled every port of France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Holland. Yet six years later he was beaten, beaten beyond hope of recovery. Why ? First because his system was obnoxious to ordinary men in Europe. Second, because British sea-power, British control of overseas resources, made his system intolerable to ordinary men in Europe. Hitler’s system, all said and done, is far more obnoxious than anything Napoleon devised. British sea-power is no weaker than in Napoleon’s day. Behind England now are the resources of an Empire Pitt did not imagine—with a United States stronger and more friendly. Because these things are so, we are sure to hold on—however difficult and unpleasant the job is—to win; to save ourselves by our exertions and the whole world by our example."
