DAFFODIL SHOW
HAMILTON FIXTURE NORTH ISLAND DISPLAY MANY CHALLENGE CUPS
On Thursday and Friday next the North Island show of the National Daffodil Society of New Zealand will be held in Hamilton in conjunction with the Hamilton Horticultural Society’s spring show. The national show has been held in Hamilton only once previously 1932, and on that occasion record attendances adjudged the show to be the outstanding horticultural event held in Hamilton. The society is fortunate in being able to stage next week’s show in the Bledisloe Hall, where the ample space and excellent lighting will enable an outstanding display of daffodils from all parts of the North Island to be shown to the greatest advantage. The National Daffodil Society of New Zealand was formed some 15 years ago with the object of encouraging the cultivation and exhibition of daffodils and the raising of new varieties. The society holds two shows each year, one in the North Island and one in the South, in conjunction with one of the established horticultural societies. Principal Trophies The principal trophies to be competed for at next week’s show are the British Raisers’ Gold Challenge Cup for three stems of each of 18 varieties of daffodils raised in the British Isles, and the Australian Growers’ Trophy for 12 varieties raised in Australia. These two trophies are competed for in the North and South Islands in alternate years. In addition there are challenge cups for three stems of each of 24 varieties of daffodils, six varieties of yellow trumpets, six varieties of white trumpets, twelve varieties of red cup and twelve varieties of seedlings. The various cups and other trophies will be on display during the week.
