MOTORISTS’ CONFERENCE

NORTH ISLAND UNION OFFICERS (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) AUCKLAND, Friday Reviewing the past year’s operations of the North Island Motor Union Insurance Company at the annual conference of the union today, the chairman of directors, Mr B. L. Donne, said there was an increase of £28,000 in the premium income, which totalled nearly £250,000. Net claims were estimated to total £147,000. The year’s surplus was £SBBO. Officers of the North Island Motor Union were elected as follows: President, Mr J. H. Edmundson (Hawke’s Bay); vice-presidents, Messrs A. Grayson (Auckland) and E. A. Batt (Wellington); council, Messrs F. G. Farrell (Auckland), W. T. Guild (Taranaki), W. A. O’Callaghan (South Taranaki), A. S. Burgess IWanganui), W. H. Brown (Manawatu), R. W. Roydhouse (Wairarapaj, E. S. Palliser (Wellington) and Dr. W. D. Fitzgerald (Hawke’s Bay).

A special minute recorded the union’s appreciation of the long service of the past-president, Dr. E. E. Porritt. __________ Loss of Shipping: In a speech at Westport on Thursday night the Minister of National Service, the Hon. R. Semple, referred to the attack on the Turakina and the loss of another big passengei ship. The latter reference has been misinterpreted in some quarters, several people concluding another ship had fallen prey to the raider responsible for the attack on the Turakina. It was stated officially in Wellington that the big passenger ship referred to was obviously the Niagara, which sank on June 19 as a result of striking a mine. The loss of the Niagara and the attack on the Turakina have been the only maritime losses in New Zealand waters during the present war.
