MALICIOUS ALARMS

FIRE BRIGADE CHECK (By Telegraph.—Frees Association) WELLINGTON, Friday Attention was drawn by the superintendent, Mr C. A. Woolley, at today’s meeting of the Wellington Fire Board to the efficacy of the board’s arrangement with the Post and Telegraph Department for tracing false alarms. Under this arrangement calls of fire by telephone are held on request by the brigade by means of a locking device fitted to the exchange telephone to enable the exchange to trace the location of the telephone through which the call is given. Mr Woolley stated that at one time from 150 to 200 malicious calls a year were received, but as a result of the arrangement made with the department and the publicity given it the number of malicious alarms had been considerably reduced. The system had been in operation for over two years. During that time many youthful offenders had been apprehended.
