WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

JUBILEE There was a fair attendance at the August meeting of the Jubilee Women’s Institute. Mrs King presided. “Good Defend New Zealand” was sung, followed by a prayer for victory. New members and visitors were welcomed. The motto for the month was “A little thought may save much afterthought.” The president reported on tree planting which took place at the lake for the centennial year. This month we were able to send two most beautiful quilts made from peggy squares donated by members. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs E. Higgins and Mrs Fisher, who very kindly made the quilts. A very interesting talk was given by Miss Jolly on the necessity of sending children to the dental clinic before attaining school age. Mrs Snell demonstrated toy making which proved a great success as several patterns were sold. Competition results were as follows: Crayon work, Mrs McLaughlan and Mrs Higgins (equal) 1; jar of marmalade, Mrs Thornley 1, Mrs Sandos 2; Victorian posy, Mrs Thornley 1, Mrs Sandos 2. The meeting closed with afternoon tea served by Mesdames Higgins, S. Binns, R. Binns. Mrs Agnew was at the trading table.

WARDVILLE The Wardville Women’s Institute met o*n August 22, when Mrs Schaare presided over a fair attendance. The members are grateful to Mrs Elliot for allowing the meeting to be held in her home. The roll call for the day was “Wedding day memories,” and the answers caused much amusement. A sitting of black orpington eggs was won by Mr C. Osborne. Members bought their own material and cut out garments for refugee children. Competitions were won as follows: —Cake, Mrs Parker 1, Mrs Hughes 2, Miss Elliot 3; iced wedding cake, Mrs Hughes 1, Mrs Schaare 2; bouquet, Mrs Hughes 1, Miss Elliot 2; best flower, Miss Elliot 1, Mrs Hughes 2, Mrs Stark 3.

The hostesses for the day were Mrs and Miss Elliot.

EUREKA The Eureka Group of Women’s Institutes held the winter meeting in the Motumaoho Hall recently. There was a large attendance of members from Hamilton, Morrinsville, Eureka, Matangi, Tauwhare, Tokoroa, Motumaoho Institutes. Mrs Lennon, the president for the day, welcomed all present and extended a special welcome to the recently-formed Tokoroa Institute. It was decided to place a box on the door to receive donations for the aeroplane fund. Misses Johns and Hunter, of the Eureka branch, presented an amusing sketch entitled “Spring Onions.” Mrs J. W. Chapman, the Federation president, gave a short talk. Motumaoho then entertained with a musical tableau, “There Will Always be an England,” the payers being Mrs Waldron, Mrs Warren, Mrs Thomas, Miss P. Horniblow and Miss M. Shaw. The talk of the day was given by Mrs F. Bullock, of Hamilton, on her recent trip to the Middle East, which proved to be very interesting. Mrs Bullock was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. Mrs Cathro, a Tauwhare member, gave a musical monologue. Miss P. Horniblow was the winner of a competition and Mrs Ball won the baby’s knitted outfit. A most pleasant meeting was brought to a close with afternoon tea served by the hostess.

FENCOURT The August meeting of the Fencourt Institute was held in the local hall recently, when the president, Mrs R. Muir presided. The roll call, “A telegram to be made from the letters of the secretary’s name,” was w*ell answered. Mrs Hill again assisted members with their glove making. A competition held during the afternoon was won by Mrs Low. It was decided to ask eyery member to knit two peggy squares each month in order to make quilts for the refugees. The results of the competitions were as follows:—Bowl of spring flowers, Mrs D. K. McMillan 1, Mrs Smart 2, Mrs D. Hughes 3; chocolate cake, Mrs Tomsett 1, Mrs Smart 2, Mrs T. Turnbull 3; article made from old garment, Mrs Johnstone 1, | Mrs Hill 2. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mrs T. Bourke and Mrs Johnstone.
