WOMEN’S GOLF

CLOSELY CONTESTED MATCHES The fixture for last Wednesday’s match day at St. Andrews was the second round of the Horton Cup and the first round of the Consolation Competition. Owing to the school vacation many members were out of town and several matches were postponed until the following week. Those who did play found almost ideal conditions as regards weather and links, and some very close games resulted. In the Horton Cup only three matches out of eight were played and two of these went past the 18th green. Mrs Bindon and Mrs Jewell, who had a very close contest all the way, found themselves all square after completing the round and had to play two more holes before the match ended in favour of the former player. Mrs Worley beat Mrs Watson also after a stern struggle w«nt to the 19th for a decision. Mrs Thomas was the winner from Miss Cann by a margin ot 3 up and 2. In the Consolation Competition five matches out of eight were played and three of these were decided on the last green, Mrs Toombs being one up on Miss Bruce, Miss P. Wilson defeating Mrs Melvin by one hole, and Mrs Taylor beating Mrs Gower on the last green. Bogey Competition The bogey competition played by the “rest” was won by Mrs Seyb, who did the excellent round of 81 gross to come home 1 down. The next in order was Mrs Simons, who played very near her handicap to turn in a card of three down.

The winner of the Saturday Bogey Aggregate (best two of four bogey rounds) was Miss Kinaston, whose aggregate was nine down. Last Saturday Miss M. McLean turned in a splendid card of 1 up on bogey, playing two under her handicap which she thus reduced to 17. As, however, she had not returned another bogey card she was not eligible for the competition. The Clachan Rose Bowl Competition has now reached the final stage. In the semi-finals, Mrs Seyb, who was conceding 11 strokes, beat Mrs Darby after a very close game 2 up and 1; while Mrs Bennett, who received 7 strokes from Mrs Mander, came in the winner by the narrow margin of 3 up and 1. This game was evenly contested but Mrs Mander was not sinking her putts with her usual accuracy. The Club Foursomes have now been finalised and resulted in a win for Mrs S. Bennett and Mrs Signal, who beat Mrs Waring and Mrs Dingle after an interesting game 2 up and 1. The committee wish to thank three members, Mrs Wooller, Mrs Grocott, and Mrs Heather, for gifts of flowering shrubs to beautify the surroundings of the clubhouse. As it is hoped to make an attractive walk between shrubs and other large flowering plants from the verandah to the first tee, these gifts are much appreciated.
