FASHION FORECASTS FOR 1940

Xn a riot of charm and colour with captivating styles quite new to the ladies of Hamilton Spring of 1940 makes its bow. It will be noted by the observant—particularly if a visit is paid to H. & J. COURT LTD.—that grey is the predominating shade. Some of the many model frocks in this establishment feature grey with hot pink, grey braided with navy and grey with fine pique and lace handworked collars. Two very striking frocks which appealed to me greatly were a grey with fancy elastic shirring on bask and on cuffs and another with smart diagonal pleating on bust and pleating from waist to hem in front. Matrons are well catered for as well as the smaller figures, for there are frocks in Jersey silk in navy and white and model frocks braided and trimmed with air puffing and the styles leave nothing to be desired. It is interesting to note that trimmings, this season, for frocks are mostly air puffing, diagonal pleating, pin tucking, hand embroidery and diagonal shirring. Visitors to H. & J. COURT LTD. should not miss seeing the large range of mantailored worsted costumes in grey, navy, brown and black, and the new sister spot frocks in two shades of grey with white spots. NEW SEASON S SPRING COATS I was intrigued with the new military style of spring coats, belted, with buttons on back of belt, front, pockets and shoulders. In addition H. & J. COURT LTD. are showing stroller, belted and fitting coats in all new pastel shades in new pin tucked, high shoulder design. There are also others in wool georgette with air puffed trimming and some spring weight woollen coats with air trimming. One particularly striking model was a coat in semifitting with air force blue, green and grey stripes. This model apapealed to me immensely. New shades in this year’s spring coats include, in addition to grey, Pali Mist, Gorse Gold, Mellow Gold, Copper Rose, Tulip Pink, Clipper Blue, Gay Blue, Moon Blue, Lake Blue, Waikiki Blue, Alpine Green and Robinhood. Moving from one department to another my eye very naturally “spotted” many articles so dear to milady of 1940. Peasant Dirndls are brighter and smarter than ever this season in

floral, striped floral and stripes and spots. Blouses, Junipers, Cardigans, Twin Sets and Pullovers in all new shades are amongst the large stocks of MESSRS H. & J. COURT LTD., as also are one-piece siren suits so smart for gardening or beach wear. MESSRS H. & J. COURT LTD. are also displaying a wide range of slacks in grey, navy and new solent blue and a marvellous array of sunray skirts and golf skirts (featuring pockets and pleats). UNDERWEAR A new note in underwear is struck this season. Dainty floral silk and locknit nighties with the new gathered bust-line are to be seen in a variety of pastel shades. Dainty trimmed lace stitch Locknit vests and panties—delightfully cool for summer—are also being shown in this department, where will be found the ever-popular white underwear for bridal outfits. MILLINERY As in coats, so in millinery, grey is depicted as being the most popular shade. The latest styles in spring straws—in both rough and smooth types—and spring felts are featured in this firm’s millinery salon. Suzy Sailors, Bretons, Flower Pots, Turbans and Military styles are included in the new season’s stocks and I noticed that quills, wings, long feathers, flowers and veils are, in many cases, used in the trimming of these hats. The wide brimmed fur felts in a large variety of shades, and turbans in taffeta, georgette, fancy crepe with plain and two-tone effects, caused me to pause in admiration, as they surely will make you when you pay a visit to this corner of this large departmental store. DRESS MATERIALS Fascinating and delightfully refreshing are all the materials in the Dress Goods Department. I was shown the latest “Fergotex” in guaranteed fast colours suitable for beach or house wear, “Spunjoy,” a beautiful guaranteed cloth in a large variety of floral, striped and spots, and "Riverina”, a very striking design with floral effects. The figured art. silk materials in bright vivid florals and checks, suitable for frocks and the popular satin Lorraine and Suede Cloque in all the newest shades and Satin Jersey, a jersey fabric with satin back suitable for street wear made their appeal. You simply must see the wonderful spring creations at H. & J. COURT LTD., Victoria St., HAMILTON.
