DEPRESSION IN RUMANIA VIENNA, August 30 Ribbentrop and Count Ciano, in speaking at the conference, made no secret of the fact that they dictated the settlement of the Rumanian-Hun-garian dispute, Ribbentrop said: “The Axis thu3 demonstrated anew that Italy and Germany are resolved to oppose Britain’s policy, which is intended to spread the war to the Danube.” Hungary and Rumania will docide the outstanding issues regarding the cession, but Germany and Italy reserve the right to impose the settlement of any deadlock. M. Manoilescu almost collapsed when he heard the .settlement read out. He fell forward in his chair. Profound depression reigned in Bucharest, where King Carol summoned prominent oppositionists to the Palace, after which a communique announcing the cession appeared with the signatures of the Crown Council and other prominent people, but it was noticoablo that tho signature of Dr. iVlaniu, the Peasant party loader, who opposed the settlement, was absent. Transylvanian reports indicate a strong spirit of resistance to the occupation by Hungaro-German troops. The Rumanian General Staff is reported to have recommended capitulation only after Ribbentrop told M. Manoilescu that he must accept the Axis plan or face an immediate invasion from Russ’a and Hungary, with German motorised units and planes cooperating.
The American Press quotes a report from Bucharest that German troops will move across Hungary to take up positions guarding the Russo-Rumanian frontier, giving Hitler access to tho Black Sea.
