Copyright) (Received August 30, 3.15 p.m.) CAPETOWN, Aug. 29 General Smuts in Parliament, replying to General Hertzog’s motion for the immediaite restoration of peace with Italy and Germany, said: “We are not going to be deflected from our course by the victorious Hitler. . The German Collosus has feet of clay. In the last war, Germany afte«r winning for four years, collapsed in a few months. Britain controls the sea and will soon gain supremacy in the air. “South Africa will prosecute the war until victory is achieved.” Basing his argument on the contention that Britain’s position is hopeless and the war already is lost, General Hertzog declared: “If peace is not concluded Afrikaanders will soon take the law into their own hands.”
General Smuts replied: “I am still confident of Britain’s ultimate victory.” General Smuts submitted an amendment reaffirming the Government’s war policy.
