GUNFIRE HEARD RAIDERS OVER LONDON LONDON, August 29 Gunfire could be heard in the London area to-night and searchlights were active. Raiders are believed to be over the suburbs. Air raiders appeared over another south-.vest town, also over the Midland and north-east England. EXPLOSION IN FACTORY MANY KILLED OR INJURED LONDON, August 29 The Bremen and Berlin radios faded out as usual at 10 p.m. Tho Berlin news agency stated that an explosion set fire to a powder factory six miles from Bologna and injured 100 people and killed many others. The cause is not known. POLITICAL OFFENDERS AMNESTY IN RUMANIA LONDON, August 29 The Swiss radio station stated that Rumania has granted an amnesty to polit'cal offenders, chiefly benefiting tha Iron Guard.
SINCERITY DOUBTED PETROL RESTRICTIONS AUCKLAND, Friday Criticism of the Government for the petrol restrictions was expressed by Mr J. H. Edmundson in moving th© adoption of the annual report at the North Island IVtotor Union Conference, and the criticism was echoed by many other speakers. Mr Edmundson said the time had come when the Government "could take a terrible amount of lead” from motorists by petrol restrictions. "We do not believe they ar© sincere in their action,” he declared, "and I think we should tell them so.” SERVICES RUGBY NORTH V. SOUTH ISLAND WELLINGTON, Friday Provided the necessary arrangements can be made, a Rugby match between representatives of the combined Army, Air Force, and Naval Services of the North and South Islands will be held in Wellington on September 28. The teams will be selected from the Air Forco and Army trainees in the two islands, including the Maori Battalion and from any sailora who happen to bo available at the time of eelection.
