LOCAL DEFENCE CORPS COMMITTEE APPOINTED (■Special to Times) OTORO-HANGA, Thursday. A local defence corps has been formed at Otorohanga, and the following committee appointed:—Major H. S. S. Westmacott, 0.8. E., Messrs P. D. Crowley (chairman or the Otorohanga County Council), FOR Phillips (chairman or the Otorohanga Town Board), T. Cumpstone, A. R. Willis, V. W. Simms, H. C. Grierson. E. McDonnell (constable In charge of the Otorohanga Police station), I. Cruickshank, H. Rothery, E. Levien, If. E. Lawrence. W. T. C. Patterson. A. C. Thompson. B. 'McKenzie. S. J. Fortescue, H. E. Waiters, A. J. Annan, A. C. Wilshier, C. A Jackson, F. W. G. Johnson and A. J. Me* Cready. Application* are being received for enrolment in the Home Guard. Mr S. J. Fortescue is acting-secretary. EXTENSIVE EARTHWORKS The Public Works gang which has been engaged on the road formation or the new highway on the northern'approach to Otorohanga has ceased work and the job is to be completed by a contracting firm. Some of the Public Works men are to go on to a farm development scheme nrat Otorohanga, while others will Join the Home Defence Force. The work they have been engaged in re'cenlly has been 'the removing of a huge hill at the approach to the recentlyerected concrete overhead bridge spanning the main trunk railway at the northern end or Otorohanga. When the hill is cut back a cutting of about 150 ft will mark the northern side or the roadway. Up to about a week ago the work was being done without the use of bulldozers. SALEYARDS SHAREHOLDERS The annual meeting of shareholders In the Otorohanga salnyards wa? presided over by Mr C. G. Murphy. An election for three directors resulted in Messrs Murphy, A. Henderson and W. Cowley being elected. Mr Murphy was re-elected chairman. Mr Howard Raker deputy-chair-man, and Mr Lear auditor. It was decided to register the oißce ol Mr Clive Tucker as the company’s ontce. Mr J. F. Trapski was appointed the company's solicitor. It was decided to commence the enlargement of the sheep pen?, and to carry out improvements to the cattle yards. It was unanimously resolved that instead of a dividend, being paid the sum available be handed to the fund for the purchase of aeroplanes for the British • iovernment. The amount involved is £37 10S.
