OBITUARY

MR J. E. CUMPSTONE (Special to Times.) OTOROHANGA, Thursday The death has occurred of a pioneer settler of the Kio Kio district, Mr Joseph Edward Cumpstone. Born at Ohaupo in 1883, Mr Cumpstone attended the Ohaupo and Kihikihi schools. In 1902, with his brother, he took up Crown land on the Kio Kio flats, as a result of the first ballot for Crown land in the northern King Country. For many years Mr Cumpstone was a successful exhibitor at agricultural shows, and was a vice-president of the Otorohanga A. & P. Association. As a young man he was a noted athlete and footballer.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married at Kio Kio in 1915, and three daughters, Mrs Alex Comfoot and Misses Jean and Alice Cumpstone, all of Kio Kio. The funeral took place at the Otorohanga cemetery on Wednesday, the Rev. E. A. Addis officiating. DR. WILLIAM MALONEY 80) 50 YEARS IN PARLIAMENT (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. copyright) MELBOURNE, August 29 The death is announced of Dr. William Maloney, the oldest member of the Federal Parliament, at the age of 86. The deceased, a doctor of medicine, was first elected to the Federal Parliament in 1903, and he had since held his seat continuously. He first entered the Victorian Parliament in 1889. In March last year he completed 50 years as a member of Parliament.
