SYRIA AND AXIS
OPPOSITION TO BRITAIN BRIBES AND INTRIGUE STIRRING UP ARABS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Aug. 28 The Italian Armistice Commission is at any moment expected at Beirut with the Axis Powers’ demands against Syria" says the Cairo correspondent of the Times. The Syrian authorities will give them a satisfactory reception, because they are distinctly unfriendly toward Britain. The border between Syria and Palestine has remained strictly closed from the Syrian side since France capitulated to the Axis Powers, except for the transit of traffic to Turkey, but British subjects remain in danger of arrest. The British Consul-General, Mr G. T. Havard, was forced to leave Beirut and take up residence at Aley, a tourist resort in Lebanon, presumably to prevent him from observing developments at Beirut or exerting any influence on the population. The Italian commission will doubtless mainly strive to stir up the Syrian Arabs against Britain with bribes and intrigue. ;
