GRANT FOR RUGBY
SCHOOLS SEEK INCREASE N.Z. UNION FINANCES (By Telegraph.—ness Association) WELLINGTON, Wednesday The fact that the New Zealand Rugby Union was budgeting for a deficit this year of £2OOO because of the loss of normal revenue and the difficulty many unions were experiencing in meeting commitments on loans was mentioned by the chairman of the management committee, Mr S. S. Dean, when replying to a deputation to-night which sought an increase in -the grant for running primary school Rugby tournaments. Mr L. Furrie (Taranaki) dealt with the origination of the tournaments and subsequently the making of grants by the New Zealand union to local unions for the promotion of primary schools football, and also separate grants for tournaments. This latter grant had grown to £4O, but this year had been reduced to £25. It was found, however, that this amount was not sufficient to meet requirements. What school Rugby authorities were mainly concerned about was that there should be security for the game. Tournaments were planned four years ahead and variations in grants created an awkward problem. He urged the New Zealand union to reinstate the grant of £4O.
Mr Dean made it clear that the New Zealand union was deeply interested in the welfare of football in schools. He promised to take the matter up with the New Zealand Rugby Council.
