CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH STRONG HOME GUARD UNIT ENTHUSIASM OF R.S.A. to Times) CAMBRIDGE, Thursday At the monthly meeting of the Boorug'n Council on Wednesday night the Mayor, Mr Edgar James, presided, and there were present Messrs A. H. Nicoll. M. Wells. W. R. Garrard, K. L. Wilkinson, N. R. Souter, W. Moore, F. T. Ray (town clerk). W. McK. Jeffery (engineer), and F. H. Green (gasworks manager). The gasworks manager reported that the number of consumers was 533. An application from the Maungatautari No. 1 School Committee for a supply of water to the school was declined. Mr J. R. James wrote stating that he intended to discontinue the collection of rubbish in the business area in Cambridge. The council approved a fund being opened to raise funds for the gift of an aeroplane to the Royal Air Force. It was stated that groups who subscribed* £SOOO were entitled to have their names on a fighter aeroplane, while £IB,OOO entitled them to similar recognition on a bomber. A draft of an agreement between the council and the proposed Waikato Airport Board, was tabled. A clause limits the council’s contribution to £lO in any one year. The draft was approved. It was stated that the Loans Board’s approval to the application for sanction to the raising of the sum of £13,000 was expected at an early date. The written assurance had been received from tiy Minister of Public Works that the Government would undertake the whole of the surface development at its own cost within 12 months of acquiring the land. When the Emergency Reserve Corps Regulations came before the meeting the Mayor stated that already Cambridge had an active unit with a strength of 150. It had been formed by the Returned Soldiers’ Association and was being taken up enthusiastically. The council, after some discussion, .and with Mr W. Moore opposed, decided to extend the 5 per cent, increase in wages to the entire staff. The yearly expenditure will be increased by £IBO.
