AMERICA AND DOMINIONS f JAPANESE COMMENT NEED FOR WATCHFULNESS (United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright) TOKIO, August 20 The Japanese newspaper Hochi Shimbun, commenting on the defence agreement between Canada and the United States, asserts that this move is the forerunner of a similar pact between the United States and Australia. “It obliges Japan to be most watchful in view of the possible effect in the Pacific region,” the newspaper adds. Other journals urge the early establishment of Japan’s “new order in East Asia,” in order to offset future collaboration between the United States and the British Dominions. Dr. Minoru Maita, a widely known lecturer and adviser to the Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, said in an interpretative article that the Australian decision to accredit a Minister to Japan meant Australia’s abandonment of dependence on England. Dr. Maita caid the appointment of Sir John Latham was clearly indicative of the Australian Government’s efforts to obtain a rapprochement with Japan.
