AIRMAN MISSING
FORMER HAMILTON MAN PILOT-OFFICER T. F. S. JOHNSON ROYAL AIR FORCE SERVICE Pilot-Officer Theo F. S. Johnson, son of Mr N. S. Johnson, of Hamilton, has been reported missing on active service with the Royal Air Force. This advice has been received in Hamilton by Mr Johnson. Pilot-Officer Johnson enlisted with the Royal New Zealand Air Force at the outbreak of war and had been in England about five months. He is 21 years of age and was born at Wellington. He was educated in Hamilton, being a pupil at the Whitiora Primary School and the Hamilton High School. At the high school he was a non-commissioned officer in the cadet company and played in the second Rugby fifteen. He left school about four years ago. Pilot-Officer Johnson joined the staff of the State Fire Insurance Office, Hamilton, after he left school. He became interested in aviation and enrolled as a member of the Waikato Aero Club, learning flying from Flying-Officer F. L. Truman at the Waikato airport, Rukuhia. Before enlisting for active service at the outbreak of war, Pilot-Officer Johnson was a member of the 2nd Medium Battery of the New Zealand Artillery, Hamilton, holding the rank of lance-bombadier. He played Rugby with the battery fifteen. In the Royal New Zealand Air Force he received, his advanced training at Wigram, Christchurch, before leaving for England to join the Royal Air Force last March.
