NOTES FROM TE AWAMUTU
WOMEN’S VOLUNTEER CORPS An enthusiastic meeting of women was recently held at Te Awamutu to consider the formation of a Volunteer Corps similar to that already formed in Hamilton. The Deputy Mayoress, Mrs Montefiore, presided. Mrs H. C. Ross, of Hamilton, who had been invited to outline the work of an organisation of this nature, gave an interesting address and answered all questions in connection with the corps. The officers elected were as follows:—Patroness, Mrs Montefiore; officer commanding, Mrs A. R. Kay; honorary secretary, Miss Betty Nobes; treasurer, Miss Frances Brooks. The first weekly meeting is to be held on August 22 in buildings very kindly lent by Mr J. Holmes. The meeting then closed with a very hearty vote of thanks to Mrs Ross and also to the chairwoman. FANCY DRESS DANCE A children’s fancy dress dance was held in the Kihikihi Town Hall recently, in aid of patriotic funds. The evening was a great success, over 70 children being in fancy costume. Mr G. Lawrie, on behalf of the patriotic committee, thanked everyone for making the evening such a success. The children gave several folk dances during the evening, in which Mr Lawrie had trained them. Miss P. North played the piano for solo dances given by Eileen Picken and Elaine North, and the Melody Makers’ Orchestra played the music for dancing. The gross takings amounted to about £l4.
