WESTFIELD MARKETS

FAT STOCK SALES GOOD DEMAND EXPERIENCED DROP IN SHEEP PRICES AUCKLAND, Thursday Last week’s extreme rates in the sheep section were not maintained at the Westfield fat stock sale yesterday. Cows and heifers also failed to make last week's quotations, although here also the demand was steady. There was an easier trend in the calf market, and in the baconer section of the pig market, but porkers met with a good demand. Light and medium-weight ox beef sold fully up to last week’s quotations, but heavy sorts were a little lower. A steer from Wing-Com-mander K. Caldwell’s farm at Papatoetoe sold at £2O ss, this being 5s more than last week’s best bid. Cows sold to £l4. The sheep yarding was a large one, and prices consequently dropped. Wethers made to 49s 6d and ewes to 395, compared with 56s 3d and 475, respectively. A full yarding of lambs came forward, selling well at ruling rates. The best price of 36s was 4s less than that of the last sale. Calves were penned in increased numbers. Runners made up to £lO 17s 6d, and vealers to £7 17s. Last week’s best bids were £lO 12s 6d and £8 3s. Values for a small pig entry remained firm on late quotations. Baconers sold to £4 18s, compared with £4 15s, and porkers to* £3 18s, against £3 17s.
