WOMEN’S GOLF TITLES to MISS M. JEFFERD PLAYS WELL SOUTH AUCKLAND MATCH PLAY Outstanding feature of the opening of match play in the South Auckland women’s golf championships at St. Andrews links today was the form of Miss M. Jefferd, the Hastings fourhandicap competitor, who appears likely to provide a strong challenge for the Ellis Cup, the championship trophy at present held by Mrs P. R. Glanville. The title-holder headed the qualifying rounds, however, and her form in match play today was good. Excellent form was displayed in the Fraser Cup first round by Mrs V. D. Edwards, of Hamilton, who is on a 17 handicap only. She secured a comfortable victory over Mrs C. A. Arthur, who plays on a 12 handicap. Close games were played in the Fraser Cup competition, decided on handicap play, for the second sixteen players to qualify. Several of the matches extended past the 18th hole. Results of the first round of match play in the three competitions are as follows: Ellis Cup First Round.—Mrs P. R. Glanville f beat Mrs E. J. Miller, 6 and 4; Mrs ' S. Bennett beat Mrs L. I. Day, 3 and 2; Mrs Seyb beat Mrs Jewell, 4 and 3; Mrs F. Mander beat Mrs C. Brewis, 8 and 7; Miss N. Beverley beat Mrs H D. Johnston, 2 and 1; Miss M. Jefferd beat Miss K. Hally, 9 and 7; Mrs J. Wilson beat Mrs G. H. Bindon, 8 and 6; Mrs H. McDonald beat Mrs C. J. Green, 5 and 4. Fraser Cup First Round.—Mrs C. F. O’Connor beat Mrs S." Wilson. 4 and 3; Mrs Brian Lloyd beat Miss M. Madeley, 2 and 1; Miss M. Campbell beat Mrs G. W. Gower, 1 up at the 21st; Mrs W. Waring beat Mrs G. Mills, 5 and 4; Miss S. Banks beat Mrs Sommer - ville, 4 and 2; Mrs Costello beat Mrs G. W. Batt, 4 and 3; Mrs W. P. Endean beat Miss F. Hewitt, 1 up at the 21st; Mrs V. D. Edwards beat Mrs C. A. Arthur, 5 and 3. Flight Match First Round.—Mrs Meredith won by default from Mrs Cornfoot; Miss J. Littleproud beat Mrs Booth, 4 and 3; Miss E. Wright beat Mrs R. G. Rainger, 3 and 2; Mrs F. H. Taylor beat Mrs R. Broadmore, 3 and 2; Mrs Berry beat Mrs R. W. Thomas, 1 up; Mrs Qualtrough beat Mrs J. A. Thomas, 1 up at the 19th; Mrs L. Chitty beat Mrs Blundell, 1 up; Mrs H. H. Toombs beat Mrs G. W. Melvin, 3 and 1.
The morning senior bogey was won by Miss M. Jefferd 1 down. Mrs V. D. Edwards had a similar score but lost on the count-back. The junior bogey match resulted in a victory for Miss Turnwald, 3 down.
