GERMAN ESCAPES
MAN-HUNT IN ONTARIO POWERFUL RADIO FOUND AT INTERNMENT CAMP (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) MONTREAL, Aug. 20 From “ somewhere in Ontario ” the police have reported that a powerful radio transmitting set has been found under the roof of one of the internment camps. Armed forces are seeking a German prisoner who tore up the floorboards of his room, tunnelled his way beneath two buildings and under the barbed wire surrounding the camp, and came up in a cornfield. It is believed the prisoner changed into civilian clothes in the cornfield and escaped. He is described as a surly, dangerous character. The area is being combed in Ontario’s greatest man-hunt. HELP FROM OUTSIDE GENERAL EXODUS PLANNED (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received August 21, 3.15 p.m.) OTTAWA, August 20 It is believed the escaped prisoner obtained wood for a three-feet high tunnel from other workers. The careful construction suggests that a general exodus was planned while the guards were off duty or asleep. The military believe that the escapee received help from outside.
