RETAIL PRICES
FLUCTUATION IN JUNE The retail price index (base, 192630—1000), for the three food groups for June was 1071, a decline of seven points since May, according to the Abstract of Statistics. The groceries and dairy produce groups showed decreases of seven and 20 points respectively, due mainly to seasonal influences. When the June indexes for food and for fuel and light are combined with the February rent index and the May indexes for the clothing, drapery, footwear and miscellaneous groups, an all-groups index of 1023 is obtained, an increase of 62.9 per cent above that for June, 1914, and of 2.8 per cent above that for August, 1939. The wholesale price index (base, | 1926-30 —1000), has advanced six l points, from 1176 in May to 1182 in June. The higher prices ruling for metals were chiefly responsible for the 16 points rise in the index for imported goods. This was counteracted to a certain extent by a fall of seven points in the index for locally-produced commodities, reflecting seasonal reductions in prices for eggs and potatoes.
