LOUD EXPLOSIONS
RAIDS ON CONTINENT SHELL-BURSTS IN FRANCE (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received Aug. 21, 11 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 20 For several hours early today loud explosions were heard across the Channel. Sweeping searchlights and shellbursts were also seen in the direction of Cologne and Calais. An Air Ministry communique, dealing with the bombing activities carried out during Monday night, reports a considerable number of raids, including thirty on aerodromes. Various oil tanks and refineries also received attention, as did the Kiel base. Three aircraft were lost in all these operations.
