DAIRY COUNCIL

MEETING TODAY GUARANTEED PRICE POSITION CONFERENCE POSSIBLE (By Telegraph.—Special to Times) WHANGAREI, Tuesday The north ward member of the Dairy Board, Mr A. J. Murdoch, left today for Wellington to attend a meeting of the Dairy Industry Council tomorrow to discuss the guaranteed price. Mr Murdoch said that the Minister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Nash, had emphasised to the Dairy Conference m 1938 the need for the stabilisation of costs in the national interests. He asked that the industry accept the previous year’s guaranteed price in order that the Government might be able to hold costs at the same level. In spite of the fact that this price was below that recommended by the 1938 committee, the industry agreed, said Mr Murdoch, and during the past two years had worked forward smoothly under this price. The representatives of the dairy farmers had agreed that the stabilisation of prices was a sound policy, but costs had been steadily rising. The 5 per cent increase in wages granted by the Arbitration Court had disturbed the industry. Now leaders were asking that action be taken in justice to dairy farmers. Mr Murdoch concluded by indicating the posibility of the council calling a conference of delegates from all areas.
