JERSEY BULL SALE

PRICES TO 450 GUINEAS IMPORTED SIRES SOLD (Times Special Reporter) AUCKLAND, Tuesday A record bench of buyers, representative of all North Island dairying districts, was in attendance at the second sale of imported Jersey bulls to be held in the Dominion at Auckland today. The eight bulls sold at today’s sale averaged approximately 321gns and realised a total of 2565gn5. The sale was conducted by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Company, with Mr C. E. Robertson in the rostrum. The eight bulls on offer were consigned on behalf of Mr Wallace MacMonnies, of New York, America, and, save when a similar offering was made cm account of the same American breeder three years ago in Auckland, there has never been a more important auction of Jersey stock in the Dominion.

Three of the bulls on offer were secured by Waikato breeders. Mr B. Moreland, of Cambridge, one of the district’s best-known breeders, was the purchaser at 300gns of a yearling bull in Royalist Dreaming Lad, a j superbly bred young sire by the famous Dreaming Royalist from Ashley’s Fancy Lass. This young sire was an attractive sire in every way and should prove an asset to Waikato’s Jersey herds. Another Waikato purchaser was Mr J. G. Holmes, of Te Awamutu who secured two of the select entries on offer. He was the final bidder at 185 gns on the five-year-old bull Goldenrod’s Blonde Design, an outstanding sort by the Grand American champion, Golden Blonde Volunteer, and from a prominent United States’ prize-winner in Design’s Golden Rod. The same buyer obtained another son of Golden" Blonde Volunteer at 160gns in the promising yearling, Blonde’s Golden Rod Design, from Design’s Golden Rod Lassie. The two purchases by the Te Awamutu buyer appeared cheap buying at the money and should do much to assist the reputation of Waikato studs. At 300gns, the Te Kauwhata breeder, Mr F. Geek, was the last bidder on a two-year-old son of the great American sire, Franchise Wonder Aim and the famous Island matron, Musette’s Jesting Beauty in Franchise Wonderful Aim, Jnr.

Top Prices Given Top price of 450gns was offered in two instances. On the first occasion it was given by Messrs A. G. Colson and Sons, Bell-block, Taranaki, for one of the star lots of the offering, in the two-year-old bull, Nuriel’s Dreaming Royalist, a cleancut typey sort, bred at the famous American establishment, Twin Oaks Farm. He was by the great sire, Dreaming Royalist from Volunteer Nuriel. The same price was given by Mr Truby King, of New Plymouth, for a dashing yearling by Franchise Wonderful Aim from Golden Blonde Links. Another yearling son of Franchise Wonderful Aim in Franchise White Aim, an equally attractive young sort from White Shanks, was knocked down to Mr A. E. Watkin, of Takanini. at 400gns. Bidding ceased at 320gns on a three-year-old sire, Erdenheim Rosebloom, an aristocratically bred sort by Kahoka’s Coronation from Erdenheim Roseway. The buyer was Mr S. Irwin Crookes, of Auckland.

A policeman who separated two j men who were fighting on Lambton I Quay, Wellington, the other Saturday j night, asked what was the trouble? Said one of the combatants pointing I to the other, “ I shouted a pie an* a cup er corfee for ’im ’cause he said ’e was down an’ out, an’ the blighter goes to try an* pinch my ’bacca — slipped ’is ’and in me pocket, he did, and nearly got away with it. And mind yer it’s the goods! National Plug, toasted, the National Tobaccer Comp’ny’s make. I’d on’y just bought it, and if this here bloke ’ad lifted it I’d a-been left all day Sunday without a smoke. So I give ’im what for.” Combatant No. 2 had nothing to say. He was nursing a black eye. Robert smiled. “Go home, both of you,” he commanded, and the pair faded out. “ A mean trick,” mused the cop as he resumed his beat, “ but National Tobacco Company’s stuff!—reckon the temptation was too strong.” Other National Tobacco Company’s brands (all toasted) are Riyerhead Gold, Desert Gold, Cavendish and Navy Cut No. 3.
