SEASON’S RECORD
VALUE OF EXPORTS FAVOURABLE WAR PRICES MORE MONEY FOR LESS BUTTER Commodity exports from New Zealand for the seasonal year ended June 30 were valued at the record figure of £65,858.636, or 13.8 per cent above the 1933-39 total. This was mainly due to the favourable wartime prices fixed by the British Government for the Dominion’s exportable surplus of meat, wool, butter and cheese. Butter retained its place as the most valuable export of the Dominion, having supplanted wool two years ago. A comparison for the past two seasons of leading exports
In considering quantities, butter declined by 6 per cent, and wool by more than 10 per cent. Meat shipments generally increased considerably, the marked fall in chilled beef being substantially offset by an increase in frozen beef. Pork shipments fell by 4 per cent. Hides and skins were lower, and, owing to the necessity dor conserving shipping space for more essential commodities, apples fell to about one-half of the previous year’s shipments, while exports of pears were negligible.
