JAPANESE CONTROL
NANKING ANNOYED MAY DELAY PEACE TREATY (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. CopyrlgM) TOKIO, Aug. 19 The efforts of the Japanese to control the British defence areas at Shanghai without consulting the Nanking puppet Government have precipitated a dispute between Nanking and Tokio, and may delay the signing of the peace treaty. Wang Ching-wei’s newspaper, the Daily News, today editorially warned the Japanese that they would be unable to carry out the “ new order ” programme if they continued to insist upon acting as Nanking’s representative in international affairs. The Tokio newspaper Nichinichi Shimbun, in an editorial, says: “ The adjustment of French Indo-China and the Netherlands East Indies by Japan’s southward policy must be very deliberate. However, an opportune time should not be missed. Indo-China and the Indies may consider Japan is too easy if the Japanese attitude is too lukewarm. If Japan takes a hesitating attitude, third Powers will undoubtedly get more chance for shady dealing toward Japan.”
